There are less than 16,000 Reticulated giraffe estimated to be left in the wild, and they are officially endangered.

Just south of Lake Turkana in Northern Kenya, within the Kasuit Desert live a group of Reticulated giraffe, surviving in harsh, arid conditions. They live largely on community lands, co-existing with people. These giraffe had historically little to no protection.

In 2021, Save Giraffes Now and the Milgis Trust established, equipped and trained a mobile team of community scouts to help protect these giraffe from poaching whilst raising awareness of the importance of conservation in the neighboring communities who share their lands with these gentle giants. Additionally, the Milgis Trust team is training camels to help track and protect the desert giraffe. These camels allow the scouts to carry additional supplies (including food and water) and cover more ground during patrols.

Since the inception of the SGN partnership with the Milgis Trust, the population of this group of giraffe has increased from approximately 40 giraffe in 2021 to around 65 individuals in 2024!

Please join us is supporting this crucial team protecting this isolated population of Reticulated giraffe.
