Maanzoni Rangers

Since 2022, Save Giraffes Now has supported an anti-poaching ranger team in the Maanzoni Conservation Area located within the Athi-Kapiti Plains just south of Nairobi, the capitol of Kenya.

The Athi-Kapiti plains are crucial in connecting four different landscapes: Nairobi National Park, Amboseli National Park, Lake Magadi Conservancy and Tsavo National Park. Connecting these ecosystems allows for genetic variability and critical space for Masai giraffe to roam and continue to increase in numbers. Maanzoni Conservation Area is crucial within this greater corridor as it is one of the key breeding areas for Masai giraffe and is where they often congregate to give birth as they recognise it as a safe and protected area.

The rangers in Maanzoni Conservation Area patrol day and night protecting not only giraffe but all wildlife species in this landscape. A key element of their job is to remove snares that poachers lay in targeted locations to catch wildlife for the bush-meat trade, as well as to reduce charcoal burning that is destroying vegetation for the wildlife.

Save Giraffes Now has worked within the Athi Kapiti landscape for multiple years. In fact, Maanzoni was one of our first projects. This commitment not only supports anti-poaching efforts within the conservancy and neighboring areas but also helps reduce habitat fragmentation. This is especially important as there are multiple giraffe and other wildlife deaths on the Mombasa Highway, a major highway that runs from the capitol of Nairobi to the port of Mombasa intercepting this landscape.

We are so proud of this team of rangers who are dedicated to protecting the wildlife and habitat of the Athi-Kapiti plains.

Please help us keep wild spaces protected so giraffe and all wildlife can move around freely and safely in their native Africa.
