Unfortunately, giraffe calves in the wild can become orphaned for several reasons: poaching, separation from the herd, drought, or in some cases the natural death of their mother. Sadly, however, there are very few giraffe orphans rescued in the wilds of Africa. This is because calves under a year old are easy targets for predator species (lion, leopard, hyena) or there isn’t a team of people looking out to try to rescue these orphans.

But there is hope: Save Giraffes Now is helping turn this tide. SGN establishes and supports rescue centers and orphanages that care for giraffe until they can be returned safely to the wild. To date SGN has actively created and invests in orphanages in Botswana and Zimbabwe, and continues to work with partners and communities across Africa to create, whenever possible, new rescue centers and orphanages to help save these precious calves left alone in the wild.
